From the President

Dear SongWorks community,

In the past month we have lost three incredible women who were friends, colleagues, and teachers to many of us. Dr. Peggy Bennett, Dr. Marty Stover, and Dr. Sister Fleurette Sweeney were founding mothers of the SongWorks Educators Association and deeply loved by all. We honor their legacies when we teach with curiosity and playfulness.

These three women shared a curiosity about children and music that led them down a scholarly path. They conducted research and wrote articles and books that guide the ways we teach music to children. I remember Dr. Bennett encouraging us to observe the children closely when we teach. Sometimes a student will read a music map or share an idea that is unexpected, but gives a window into their understanding of the music.

One of the most welcoming aspects of any SongWorks gathering is the playfulness that we share. Adults hardly ever take the opportunity to play with each other! Playing together is one of the best ways to get to know one another and build a community. This year I have been trying to incorporate the same playfulness the kids experience in general music class to my beginning band lessons. I wanted to try slowing down and taking more time at the beginning of the year to play games with the group. I am starting to see some new friendships forming as a result of this focus on play.

As you work to bring curiosity and playfulness into your classroom, remember the incredible shoulders that we stand on. Our website has newsletter articles, lesson ideas, and interviews by Dr. Bennett, Dr. Stover, and Dr. Sweeney, and their legacy of teaching and learning lives on in each of us as we continue their work.

With Gratitude,
Anna Shelow
