From the President – August 2026

August 2026

Dear SongWorks Family,

By the time you read this, our teachers in my home state of Texas will be back in the classroom with students. One of the fascinating things–to me–is how different the school year looks from one state/province/country to the next! Some of our SWEA members started school at the end of July while others don’t begin until after Labor Day. And many of you taught at summer programs, too!

Whenever you start back to school, I hope you have an awesome year of making music with children and sharing the SongWorks principles and practices with your colleagues! Speaking of which, last month I sent our members a survey about presenting or mentoring those who wish to present SongWorks-themed workshops. If you haven’t filled it out yet, it won’t take you more than a couple of minutes, so please take time now to do so.

I’m happy to announce that our SongWorks courses were well attended last month at the University of Utah. We had a total of 21 educators attend Level 1 (SongWorks in Action), Level 2 (SongWorks for Musicality), and SongWorks for the General Classroom. Level 3 is a teaching practicum which takes place during the school year and we hope to have several students participate in completing their SongWorks Certification this year. A big thank you to this summer’s course instructors and our SongWorks Certification Director, Betty Phillips, for all of the preparation that contributes to a successful week of learning. Your hard work does not go unnoticed!

We hope you’ll make plans to attend our SongWorks Conference this spring. We’ll gather together in Dallas, Texas on April 9 and 10 for a time of refreshment, playful learning, and joyful music-making, and we’d love it if you were there with us!

Finally, make sure you are following us on social media to make connections and get the latest updates and photos from SongWorks events. We have a public Facebook page, an Instagram account (follow us @SongWorksEd) and our Facebook sharing group, where ANY of our members can ask questions and share ideas. Please request to join if you haven’t already!

Have a fulfilling 2026–27 school year and don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or ideas!

Blessings,

Natalie Neugent

Playing with Sally

“Sally Go ‘Round the Sun” is a classic game to play with younger elementary students! You may have read many variations of how to play the game, add partner songs, and more in the Sturdy Songs Collection on the SongWorks website. I have used this song with grades K–2...

Looby Loo Scores and Scrambles

Playful Teaching – Vibrant Learning! What an inspirational tagline! Yet we easily fall into ‘habitual teaching’ where we take the same route to achieve a specific learning goal. This group of lessons is suggested as a pathway to vibrant learning. The ultimate goal is to be skillful in reading and musical in performing several different scores for “Looby Loo.”

A Musical Evolution of Notation: Introduction

A Musical Evolution of Notation: Introduction

Often, conventional music notation is studied on an elemental level by pulling visual symbols, representing rhythm and pitch, out of their musical context for study. What happens when we consider that complex traditional music notation has become so rigid that its study at an elemental level lacks value, function, or power?
