From the President

January 2025

Dearest SongWorks Educators,

Happy New Year! I hope this holiday season has been filled with joy, rest, and opportunities to recharge.

For much of my life, I felt the pressure to make New Year’s resolutions aimed at fixing perceived faults or failures. Like many, I’d start with good intentions, only to abandon those resolutions within weeks or months, leaving behind a sense of shame for failing once again.

A few years ago, I adopted a different approach. Instead of focusing on what needed to be “fixed,” I began celebrating the New Year by reflecting on the past year—specifically, the moments that brought me joy. I set goals to incorporate more of those experiences into my life. More creativity. More time with loved ones. More service. More music! By channeling my energy into the positive aspects of my life, I not only avoided the shame spiral of unmet resolutions but also fostered an abundance mindset that has transformed my mental wellness and overall happiness.

As we step into 2025, I invite you to take a moment to reflect on the joys in your life and perhaps, in your teaching. For me it was moments of laughter, playfulness, and connection. Consider setting an intention to amplify those moments in the year ahead. Focus on what you have and what you love, and let joy guide your energy and goals.

One source of joy I’m especially looking forward to is our upcoming SongWorks Conference in Dallas, TX! Be sure to register and make plans to join us in April. Our dedicated conference planning team has been working hard to create an unforgettable experience, and it won’t be the same without YOU. The conference promises to be a wonderful opportunity to connect, inspire, and uplift one another—something we all need.

Thank you for being a part of this community and for helping to make it such an incredible resource. Let’s continue to support and uplift each other in the year ahead. I hope to see you in Dallas this April!

Wishing you a joyful and abundant 2025.

Sincerely,

Rachel Gunderson

Playful Teaching – Vibrant Learning! What an inspirational tagline! Yet we easily fall into ‘habitual teaching’ where we take the same route to achieve a specific learning goal. This group of lessons is suggested as a pathway to vibrant learning. The ultimate goal is to be skillful in reading and musical in performing several different scores for “Looby Loo.”

A Musical Evolution of Notation: Introduction

Often, conventional music notation is studied on an elemental level by pulling visual symbols, representing rhythm and pitch, out of their musical context for study. What happens when we consider that complex traditional music notation has become so rigid that its study at an elemental level lacks value, function, or power?

In 1946 during my first year of undergraduate studies, I took my very first course in philosophy. How I loved that course! Yet for all my enthusiasm at the time only two precise memories remain. Those of you who know me will laugh at this first one simply because I haven’t changed a whit to this day!
